Grout McTavish was retained to design YVR’s new thematic masterplan for the pier D expansion. Working with Connect Landscape Architects the firm developed the pier’s signature forest courtyard as a new focal point for the terminal that features native species of trees and planting set amongst a tidal pool backdrop. Leveraging our expertise in the design of biome environments our team conducted detailed studies of the thermal and solar orientation of the exterior courtyard to determine the optimal placement of planting while ensuring the sustainability of the biome through the deployments of Par spectrum lighting, advanced irrigation and misting systems. Opened in 2020 this signature piece furthers YVR’s standing as the best Airport in the world.
