Grout McTavish Architects was engaged to create an effective yet inviting solution to protecting the 2010 Olympic Cauldron installed on Jack Poole Plaza. The client was concerned to prevent vandalism and climbing with the potential liabilities. As architects we saw an opportunity to enhance placemaking in the public environment of the plaza while protecting the Cauldron. The resulting reflecting pool has become a successful context for the Cauldron, reflecting its creative glasswork frame and providing seating and photo opportunities for the public who are drawn to get as close to the Cauldron as possible.
