English bay has been the home of the Boathouse restaurant since the late 1980's. This iconic, waterfront building stands as nautical fixture along the seawall. Its setting at the English Bay provides a unique opportunity to improve the beach view for locals and tourists. This project involved the revitalization and renovation of the existing restaurant, patio and parking. Our approach to the renovation is to limit the exterior changes while respecting the original building. Renovating the public facades by various soft and natural materials provides the opportunity to create a strong local connection and response to the coastline. The proposed design is driven by a desire to acknowledge the contextual location and pay homage to the previous restaurant. The goal is not create a branded building but for the project to feel approachable, rooted in the fabric of city and as if Craft might have always called this building home.
